Chatham's Historic Business District encompasses the Main St. downtown business area. With buildings dating back to the mid-1800s, Main Street is the visually cohesive, true commercial and social center of town. National Register of Historic Places.
The Chatham Historic Business District Commission (HBDC) is the town regulatory body with the purpose of promoting the cultural, economic and general welfare of the inhabitants of the town through appropriate development within the district. It focuses on preserving the distinctive character of buildings and places significant in the history and development of Chatham, maintaining and improving the settings of these buildings and places, and encouraging designs which are compatible with existing buildings in the district.
